The contrast is touching, as the lady in the red kimono uncovers her white face from the Japanese hand fan. She turns around as though she wants to take us by surprise, perform for us a unique metamorphosis, the one of a French woman transforming into a geisha. She has set-up the room into a make-believe tale, hanging fans all over the walls, wearing the majestic kimono which her husband brought back during one of his trips to the Land of the Rising Sun.
She tames the angry samurai embroidered on the back of the coat by her charm and her innocence, and her suave tied up blond hair soothes the violence of the blood-red colour. She wears an unknown and exotic world on her shoulders with such poise and serenity that it is unsettling to watch. She plays, twirls and seduces in the red kimono. For a mere moment, she has found a distraction from everything familiar and dull.
